Notes: Son of Rev. Peter Dubois & Anne Clarkson Carne, John was a man of many talents. A gin mill manufacturer and inventor, he was also a writer, and like his father, a preacher. In 1820, he and his friend and future brother-in-law, Joseph William Houck, traveled from Charleston, South Carolina to Dutch Bend, Alabama. The story of their trip is found within the various articles he wrote. He married in Autauga County Alabama on January 6, 1825, Louisa Williams, a daughter of Josiah Williams and Judith Elmore (sister of Gen. John Archer Elmore). Their wedding was a double ceremony with his friend, Joseph Houck, who married Anne Elmore Williams, Louise's younger sister. By 1850, John and Joseph, now devout Methodists, were living in Greensboro, Alabama, where they spent most of the remaining years working and raising their families.
