Copies obtained from Darlington County Historical Commission, Darlington, SC, 03 July 2003. In possession of Anita Nail, Greenville, MS.
Research to document my DuBose line for membership in the Huguenot Society of South Carolina led to proving that my GGG grandmother, ANNE, wife of JOEL PETER DuBOSE, was definitely a child of TIMOTHY and ELIZABETH (MULDROUGH) LEE.
I spent July 3rd in the Darlington County, SC Historical Commission with Mr. Horace Rudisill, the Director (who unfortunately died on July 15). He led me to DAVID McMULDROUGH’S estate packet, Equity File 522. This file is the largest file in the county. David Muldrough died in 1827, but since his 9 children moved away, the estate couldn't be settled for over 50 years. Luckily for me, there was a huge amount of paperwork involved in this case, which Mr. Rudisill had abstracted. Apparently, ANNE LEE married JOEL PETER DuBOSE in Sumter County, SC, so she was already a DuBose when they moved to Barbour County, AL. Then they moved to Choctaw County, AL before 1833, so people in Barbour County didn't remember her when county history books were written. Timothy sold his interest in behalf of his wife, so their family wasn't discussed in court records after that.
"The State of South Carolina, County of Darlington} Equity Side Court Common Pleas
M. A. McClenaghan vs Thomas Sansbury & wife & others } Bill for Partition account & relief
The Complainant in her Bill alleges that DAVID McMULDROW and MARY his wife died many years ago having had nine children who arrived at the years of maturity whose names and residences, so far as Complainant could ascertain, are as follows:
I. ELIZABETH, wife of TIMOTHY LEE - both dead, they left a son Andrew, a son David, a son James, and daughters Mary, ANNE, Agnes, Elizabeth, a son Timothy and other children whose names none of the witnesses knew."
Mr. Rudisill’s secretary typed an affidavit concerning ANNE being listed as a child of ELIZABETH and TIMOTHY. In the abstract, he made a list of the children that he found listed in other parts of the Equity Roll, so this list is culled from the court records of Darlington District, SC.:
"To Whom It May Concern
I do hereby certify that the single typed page annexed hereto entitled "McMULDROUGH Equity Roll 522" was prepared by me in or about the year 1955. It is an abstract of the legal papers in Equity Roll 522 then on file in the Darlington, S.C. Court House as part of the public records of the said county.
Note that ANN LEE, who later married a DuBOSE, is the daughter of TIMOTHY and ELIZABETH MULDROW LEE, and is shown here as an unmarried female.
Signed at Darlington, S.C. this 3 day of July A.D. 2003

.......................
This is so important to our family, because another family researcher combined Mary Lee and her sister, ANNE LEE, creating, “Mary Anne” Lee. Then she married this fictional “Mary Anne” Lee to a man young enough to be their son. In reality, Mary Lee married Asa DuBose, and her sister ANNE LEE married Asa’s brother JOEL PETER DuBOSE.
(Asa DuBose and JOEL PETER DuBOSE were the sons of JEPHTHAH DuBOSE, grandsons of JOHN and LYDIA (CARTER) DuBOSE, G grandsons of STEPHEN and LYDIA DuBOSE, and GG grandsons of ISAAC and SUSANNE (COUILLANDEAU) DuBOSE, our original Huguenot ancestors.)
This is the only record I’ve ever found that shows my ANNE LEE line, tracing to JOHN LEE of Nansemond County, VA. This same researcher joined the DAR through this family, but claimed the family was descended from The Lees of Virginia, which, according to a cousin’s DNA results, is an unrelated line. As far as I know, it is still shown on DAR records. I proved it to my satisfaction, and that of the Huguenot Society, so I’m confident it is correct.
If you are from this DuBose or Lee family, I’d be glad to help you. There are many inaccuracies attributed to this family, and I’d love to clear them up!
