    Notes:

He was raised a poor boy. His parents were not able to give him but very little schooling. They were not able to buy him a reader so he took the New Testament to school to read in, and I think that is why he was the man he was. There is no greater book to read today than the New Testament.

His parents were Methodists but he said the New Testament did not teach the Methodist Doctrine so he joined the Missionary Baptist Church. He moved to Florida in 1860 and soon enlisted in the civil war. When the war was over he came back to his family and started life over again. He never accumulated much of the worlds goods for he- - - [text unreadable] - - - saw their second generation and most saw their third generation. Not one of them was ever arrested by an officer, not one ever crippled in a wreck, and all that are dead, died a natural death.

Now here is something peculiar: All nine of his children married and lived to be old, but everyone of them lost their companions and was "left a widow or widower". Not one of them used tobacco nor intoxicating drinks, neither did any of them use profane language, but everyone of them made a profession of Jesus Christ in early years. And truly the best thought is that we have the evidence that we will be one unbroken family reunited in Heaven.

    CSA Service:

At age 38, and much against his will, compelled to join Captain Stewart's Company E, 9th Florida Infantry, 21 February 1863. Assigned to guard ordinance depot in Lake City, Florida. Rushed to help Lee against Grant in Virginia in the fall of 1864, he crossed picket lines and surrendered to Union Forces on the night of 6 October 1864. He took Oath 10 October 1864 and shipped to Cleveland, Ohio. Described in Federal records as resident of Columbia County, Florida, light complexioned, dark haired, grey eyes, 5' 7" tall.

    Moved, family:
Information recorded by martha DuBose Cook, age 80, Sept., 1936, as told to Annie (Guynn) Jones, her niece.

The Migration from South Carolina to Florida of Ezekiel Dossey DuBose and Family in 1860.

"They loaded a two horse wagon with their greatest necessities. The horses were named Sealam and Gander. Cassa Ann DuBose, the wife and mother, drove the team with Louvenia, the baby, on her lap. Martha, four years old sat in a little chair beside her mother. the father, three sons, two daughters, and Columbus Polk, a cousin, walked all the way."

"They begaan their journey in October 1860, and reached their destination, thirteen miles above Lake City, Fla., some time in November, 1860. They were four weeks on the road."

"They had a tent which they stretched at night, where they spread their beds for the parents and small children. Columbus "Lum" Polk and the two older boys slept in the wagon. Father had a rifle with which he killed game to help feed the family on the road. I remember one evening, we had a crow, a dove and a squirrel to prepare for supper. All three were cooked and the brains taken from each and use to tan the squirrel skin for shoe strings. Father was a shoemaker, too."

"Once we came to a creek where father had to take the oldest daughter and youngest two walking chldren on his back, one at a time, to put them across the stream. They remained in Florida the rest of their lives, and lived to be seventy-five and five months, and seventy-six and six months, and left every child alive, which was nine."

    Notes:

Information on this family in Sup I furnished by Mrs. Clora W. Simpson, High Springs, Fla., July, 1974.

"Grandfather John DuBose sold his negroes, went to Georgia, squandered his means and returned to S.C. quite a bachelor and was subject to convulsions. The convulsions were caused by a tree falling and striking limbs of another tree which hit him on the head and fractured his skull."

"Mary Polk must have lived in a distant or adjoining settlement because she went home with a girl friend, and John DuBose, the bachelor, was at the home of the friend. When he, John the Bachelor, saw the girls coming he asked who they were, and after being told, he said that Polly Polk should be this wife if he could get her to be. Mary Polk knew the DuBose's were "well to do" but did not know that her John was poor until after they were married."

"When grandfather John DuBose died at his own home near Timmonsville, S. C., his son Ezekiel DuBose took the body about 30 miles away to bury it."

"Grandmother Mary (Polk) DuBose migrated to Florida in 1870 and died in 1876." (Quoted information told to Annie (Guynn) Jones, niece of Martha (DuBose) Cook, Sept., 1936, High Springs, Fla.)

Although an actual birthdate is not shown, possible birth years are also 1791 or 1796.
The location of John's burial is unknown. Ezekiel is said to have taken his father and buried him "about 30 miles away", supposedly from Timmonsville. Martha Ann DuBose remembered from what she had been told by her parents that John DuBose was "20 or 25 years her senior", meaning that John was at least forty when they married. This meshes nicely with the story about him being the "prodigal son" who squandered his youth and inheritance somewhere in Georgia.

John married Polk, Mary E. about 1824 in Darlington, Darlington County, South Carolina, United States. Mary was born on 9 Feb 1800 in Darlington, Darlington County, South Carolina, United States; died on 10 May 1876 in Lake City, Columbia County, Florida; was buried on 11 May 1876 in Olustee-Providence Cemetery, Providence, Florida. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 25.  Polk, Mary E. was born on 9 Feb 1800 in Darlington, Darlington County, South Carolina, United States; died on 10 May 1876 in Lake City, Columbia County, Florida; was buried on 11 May 1876 in Olustee-Providence Cemetery, Providence, Florida.

    Other Events:

    • Religion: Between 1837 and 1869; a member of Lake Swamp Baptist Church
    • Moved, Ind: CA 1870, Florida, United States

    Notes:

Mary was known as "Polly". The origin of the name "Polly" is unknown. She relocated to Florida and probably lived with her son Ezekiel until her death. She is buried in the Olustee Cemetery, Providence, Florida.
