Our ancestor, Isaac DuBose, was one of the persecuted huguenots who fled from France to South Carolina in1686.
The First Civil War between the Catholics and the Huguenots took place in 1562 during the reign of Charles IX.
After a bloody conflict at Druex, peace was made in favor of the Huguenots, But it was only temporary. When
the Edict of Nantes was issued in 1598 during the reign of Henry IV, the Huguenots were guaranteed religious
freedom and lived in sporadic safety until 1685 when the Edict was revoked by Louis XIV. The persecutions
were then so horrible, it became necessary to seek liberty in other countries.
South Carolina participated in the benefits which these people of great industry and moral habits contributed to
the countries in which they settled. It was not easy at first, as the English Colonists resented the French being
given the same rights as themselves. However, by 1696 the French had taken the oath of allegiance to the English
Crown, and the differences were gradually reconciled. There is a list in book form, of the French refugees who
took the oath. Isaac DuBose's name is on the list, also, that of his wife and other relatives.
A large number of the refugees, including the DuBoses, settled on the south side of Santee River, where a town
called Jamestown was laid out in the Parish of St. James. The area around became known as "French Santee".

Stephen DuBose, b. ca.1702 m. first Lydia (d. ca. 1739) m. 2nd Elizabeth. Records of Stephen DuBose and his
Family are incomplete. The "History of Williamsburg County" by W.W. Boddie refers to Stephen and Elizabeth
DuBose as Living in Williamsburg District and on a list of heads of families in Williamsburg Township. About
1769/70 Stephen and his family moved up to Lynches creek as Memorials Vol. 10 p 133 S.C. Department of
Archives, Columbia, S.C. shows Stephen Dubusk received 150 acres of land in a grant in Craven County
05/25/1770. Pre-Revolutionary War plats Vol. 11, p. 247 of Oct. 7, 1769 shows the plat for Stephen Dubusk on
the South side of Lynches Creek. Plat Vols. Also in archives show this the location that became Cartersville.
John Dubose, son of Stephen and first Lydia (possibly other unknown) was born 06/13/1738 (Christ Church
Parish Register-from S.C. Historical and Genealogical Magazine Vol 28 p. 128). He died ca. 1799/1800. He
married Lydia Carter.
Sumter County, S.C. Deed Book AA 1794-1804 p 156-157, Sumter S.C. shows John Dubose deeded land
06/04/1796 (originally granted to Stephen Dubose in 1770 to Jeremiah Moore, John Dubose (called Junior to
distinguish him from his older relative of the same name) lived in Darlington County. This Land was in Salem
County. Which Later became part of Sumter District. John Dubose obtained several grants of land from land
grants recorded in Archives and Plats showing the same. The land deeded to Jeremiah Moore was "proved" by
Lydia Dubose November 19, 1796. From the above it appears John Dubose inherited his father Stephen Dubose's
land, that was originally a grant to Stephen DuBose. Since Darlington County records were partially destroyed,
only a partial list exists today. Darlington County Deed Book H p. 30-32, Clerk of Court Office, Darlington, S.C.
shows conveyance dated 09/24/1800, of property of John DuBose deeded to John Crow. This included five tracts
of land, or 1300 acres, originally granted to John Dubose and shown on the plat. Dated 1800 and recorded
12/16/1820--this transaction shows them and their spouses signing releases:

Isaac DuBose the emigrant to South Carolina, was the son of Louis Dubose and wife Anne of Dieppe, Normandy,
France. He was born in Dieppe ca. 1665, died in South Carolina ca 1718. About 1688 he married Suzanne
Couillandeau who was born ca. 16--, died ca 1740. She was from LaTremblade, province of Saintonge, France.
Daughter of Pierre Couillandeau, Sr. and wife Marie Fougeraut. Marie married four times, her last husband being
Moyse Briguad, who came to South Carolina with them. He bought lots 28 and 33 in Jamestown.
When the children of Isaac and Suzanne DuBose grew up and married some established homes in other sections
of S.C. Stephen owned a grant of land on Lynches Creek in the Darlington District. He moved his family there
about 1770. Quite a number of relatives settled nearby. His son, John obtained several grants of land as recorded
in the S.C. Archives, Columbia S.C. John served in the American Revolutionary War as a soldier under Lt. Col.
Marion and furnished needed provisions for the army. After John's death about 18101811. Jeremiah DuBose and
family, Mary DuBose and husband, Daniel Cole sold their lands on Lynches Creek and started moving South.
Daniel and Mary lived a few years in Edgefield District S.C. They with other relatives moved to Washington
County, Ga. Jeptha DuBose lived next door to them. By 1809 Daniel and Mary were living in Pulaski County,
Georgia. They were next listed in Alabama. Finally settled in Pike County, Alabama, where they lived the rest
of their lives. Therefore, we are descended from Mary DuBose Cole, daughter of John and Lydia Carter DuBose,
granddaughter of Stephen DuBose. Stephen was the son of Isaac DuBose, the immigrant.
